For us, the idea for a quality product coupled with excellent customer service was born back in 1978 where our founder Johnny Lehane had a vision at a time when manufacturing industries were growing in Ireland and the demand for pallets and packaging was increasing.  Thus, Mid Cork Pallets was born alongside a country farmhouse in the heart of Co. Cork.  The vision was clear: a dependable, efficient and reliable service to match the pace of growth in Irish industry.

Soon the business was quick to out-grow the facilities available, and the Clondrohid, Co. Cork site expanded exponentially and beyond the dreams of its founder.   Having invested heavily in their facilities and premises, Mid Cork Pallets were the first company in Ireland to purchase an automated pallet manufacturing machine to ensure quality, accuracy and speed.  This has allowed Mid Cork Pallets to cement itself as the largest manufacturer and supplier of wooden pallets in Ireland.  In addition, Mid Cork Pallets expanded nationwide with the purchase of a second site in Dunboyne, Co. Meath to service more of our customers in the Northern half of the country.

Coupled with this organic growth, Mid Cork Pallets diversified into the Packaging industry in 1992 and became known as Mid Cork Pallets & Packaging.  The Company’s product range and offering has grown exponentially since then, to cover an extensive range of single wall corrugated cardboard boxes, to specialised solid board and Folding Box Board (FBB) all custom designed to meet the needs of our growing customer base in the food and beverage, e-commerce and pharmaceutical industries.

In December 2011, Mid Cork Pallets & Packaging endured the consequences of a devastating fire which affected over 50% of our Cork site. This catastrophe, however, allowed us to refocus and rebuild resulting in our state-of-the-art warehousing facilities to suit the modern needs of our expanding businesses.

We know that the quality and accuracy of each wooden pallet (euro pallet or standard pallet) or shipping crate is paramount to our customers and that is why we were the first in Ireland to introduce a fully automated production line which can produce over 9,000 pallets in one day and produce over 2.5 million pallets per annum. Coupled with this, we provide a Pallet Design Service (PDS®) to help design and produce pallets that suit our customer’s specific requirements.

In terms of packaging, we offer hands on design, prototyping and expert advice to create exciting and original packaging solutions from single wall corrugated cardboard boxes, to specialised solid board and Folding Box Board (FBB).  We have an in-house designer and can produce samples and have them delivered to our customers immediately to make sure it is the right solution for them.  That’s not all, we also handle the manufacturing process for you, store and provide a stock management service so you always have a continuous supply of packaging.

With two locations nationwide to service the Irish market both North and South and the UK, we are strategically located to provide fast and efficient delivery of your pallets and packaging solutions. Our Clondrohid facility in Co. Cork has over 60 acres and consists of over 500,000 sq. ft. of purpose built manufacturing and storage facilities. In our Dunboyne facility in Co. Meath, we have over 200,000 sq. ft. of storage facilities covering over 15 acres.  In recent months we are delighted to be able to expand our operations and are in the process of building 2 new state-of-the-art warehouses at both our Cork and Meath sites.  This will increase our capacity by an additional 20,000 pallet spaces and will allow MCP to store and distribute more of our customers’ products.

Pallets

At Mid Cork Pallets & Packaging, we were the first company in Ireland to install an automated pallet production process to ensure quality and accuracy of the wooden pallets that we produce.  Therefore, when a customer contacts us, they might need new pallets designed or they could have unique specifications (pallet size or dimension) to transport their product.  Using our licensed Pallet Design System (an internationally recognised multi-functional design package developed by the US National Wood Pallet & Container Association), our design team work closely with each customer which allows us to create the most appropriate pallets/shipping crates etc. to meet their exact requirements. Once the specification is agreed upon, we sustainably source the timber required and production space is allocated.

Fully automated nailing machines are used to assemble the pallets and one machine can nail at a rate of 225 pallets per hour. Our main pallet line can produce a pallet in 8 seconds, equating to a total of over 2.5 million new pallets produced per annum.  It doesn’t just stop there though, as our Production facility boasts extensive heat treating and kiln drying capabilities to ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures) standard for the treatment of wooden packaging to control the spread of plant pests, especially during export.

We have 10 kilns onsite, which allows us to Heat Treat and Kiln Dry up to 35,000 pallets per week.  The critical process control parameters within our kilns are independently calibrated on a regular basis to ensure effective heat treatment of our pallets.  Click here for further information on our Pallets.

Packaging

Mid Cork Pallets & Packaging produce, store and distribute more than 10,000 packaging products across the food & beverage, pharmaceutical & manufacturing industries.  We are committed to supplying our customers with custom designed and printed corrugated/cardboard packaging boxes first time, every time. We work with our customers from inception right through to developing a prototype, ordering, warehousing and fulfilling. We know that our customers are typically not only satisfying their own end customer but also retailers, third party suppliers/wholesalers etc. and are typically prescribed various rules and regulations. This is why we listen to our customers, coupled with best practice and through our extensive knowledge of the industry we are able to exceedingly meet our customer’s needs.

Utilising our CAD (Computer Aided Design) software and Design and Prototyping service, customers can receive samples of their corrugated packaging solution prior to commitment to ensure that it meets both their requirements and/or their third-party requirements.

Mid Cork Pallets & Packaging manage our operations to minimise environmental impacts in areas such as waste, energy use and emissions. We will, as a minimum, conduct our business activities in compliance with all statutory requirements.  In fact, according to recent research published by the Pallet Foundation “the reusable nature of wooden pallets makes them a more circular, sustainable form of reusable packaging, when considering the life cycle of a pallet, they can have a potential net carbon positive impact. Through the unique properties of wood, carbon offsets may be achieved by the reuse of pallet materials and substituting wood fuel from pallet waste (e.g., unusable pallets) for biomass”.  It must also be noted that wooden pallets can also be recovered, reused, repaired, recycled and even upcycled which makes them once of the ultimate sustainable products on the market today.

We care deeply about the origin of our wood and source all our pallet wood locally from responsibly sourced certifed  suppliers in the Forestry industry. We are constantly reviewing our production processes and our Environmental Management Plan to be mindful of the impact our business has on our environment and as a result are taking several preventative steps to minimise our carbon footprint.

Some of these steps include:

• Investing heavily in our premises to increase our sustainability with the introduction of our Combined Heat & Power Plant which will heat our Production facilities, power our 10 onsite kilns and generate green electricity.  Cork Green Energy produces 1.2 megawatts of green electricity per hour, which is being supplied directly to the national grid and can power the needs of up to 1,000 homes
• We have installed a 598KWp solar generation facility (which equates to over 2000 solar panels) on nearly 4000 square metres of unused rooftop at our Clondrohid site and another 100KWp solar installation at our Dunboyne site, which will reduce our CO2 emissions by 265 tonnes a year
• Intelligent & Responsive LED lighting systems
• We also supply plastic and aluminium pallets (which are typically known for their reusable capabilities) and a wide range of second-hand pallets.

In terms of our other core raw material of corrugated packaging, we source our packaging solutions from recycled sources again from responsible sourced certified suppliers in the Foresty Industry (where possible). We aim to reduce our carbon footprint, one pallet or package at a time.
