Why are wooden pallets the sustainable choice in any supply chain?
Simply put, wood comes from a renewable source and constitutes around 99% of a wooden pallet. Wooden Pallets can be recovered, reused, repaired, recycled and even upcycled which makes them one of the ultimate sustainable products on the market today.
In recent years, sustainability and the circular economy have been receiving huge attention as Ireland and the world are taking decisive action to reduce our Greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, how can the humble wooden pallet help companies protect the environment into the future and ensure their supply chains are meeting their green credentials?
As many companies are struggling to get their heads around this, we have outlined below the top 4 reasons why buying wooden pallets are seen as one of the most sustainable and reusable packaging solutions available:
Buying pallets is a sustainable choice
Wood is a highly versatile, sustainable and renewable resource and typically the timber used to manufacture pallets is sourced from FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) certified suppliers which promotes responsible management of the world’s forests.
Pallets can be repairable
One of the greatest strengths of pallets is the ease with which they can be repaired, sometimes up to 10-15 times. Unlike other types of pallets (plastic or metal), wooden pallets can be damaged or broken but affordably and quickly fixed. As a result, deck boards, stringers, etc can be replaced or repaired which allows pallets to be used multiple times before coming to their end of life.
Pallets can be recyclable
Pallets are one of the most recyclable materials on the market as they can be used for so many different things before being disposed of, such as used to repair other pallets, ground into mulch for landscaping, upcycling into furniture.
Carbon off setter
According to research published by the Pallet Foundation on the Environmental Product Declaration for Wooden Pallets “the reusable nature of wooden pallets makes them a more circular, sustainable form of reusable packaging, when considering the life cycle of a pallet, they can have a potential net carbon positive impact. Through the unique properties of wood, carbon offsets may be achieved by the reuse of pallet materials and substituting wood fuel from pallet waste (e.g., unusable pallets) for biomass” thus decreasing the amount of carbon emissions in the atmosphere.
Therefore, when choosing how you transport your product both nationally or internationally, it is important that you choose wisely in terms of cost, durability and now sustainably also. This is where the pallet, be it a new pallet, second hand pallet, EURO pallet or Heat Treated Pallet, in all its glory, shape and form, will be the continued choice now and into the future for companies.
